WHAT’S IN THE BOX / NOTES FROM THE FARM :

A note on last week’s share…  We realized after the fact that the broccoli we sent out to some of you last week was not great.  Our apologies.  Growing summer broccoli is next to impossible, but we tried our best!  We have LOTS of broccoli planted for the fall when it actually grows well! If any of you had issues with the quality or with some insects, please toss it in your compost.  It was a bonus item in the box, so its value was not calculated in the share total.

We have a bit of a lull in the harvest this week.  It happens every year mid-July.  We’re looking forward to harvesting more amazing veggies for you again in the coming weeks.  What’s coming up in the next month?  Corn!  Tomatoes!  Peppers!  Green Beans!  Watermelons!  In the meantime, enjoy one more week of these early summer favorites…

Cipollini Onions – A lovely early onion – sweet and mild!  Here’s the Kitchn’s take on what to do with them… I love to braise them.  See the recipe below.
Storage: In an airtight (plastic) bag in the refrigerator. Uses: Raw/Cooked  When to use: Within 5 days.

Sugarloaf Chicory – These are back again this week!  Here are some great recipe ideas…
Storage: In an airtight (plastic) bag in the refrigerator. Uses: Raw/Cooked  When to use: Within 5 days.
Batavian Lettuce – This crispy lettuce grows well in the summer, and it’s one of our favorite varieties with lovely flavor and leaf texture.
Storage: In an airtight (plastic) bag in the refrigerator. Uses: Raw  When to use:Within 5 days.

Swiss Chard – This cooking green loves the summer heat.
Storage: In an airtight (plastic) bag in the refrigerator. Uses: Cooked  When to use:Within 5 days.

Zucchini/Summer Squash – We’re reducing the quantity of squash in the share this week to give you all a little break!  They’re so good sliced and grilled…
Storage: In an airtight (plastic) bag in the refrigerator. Uses: Raw or Cooked, Baked When to use: Within 5 days.

Cucumbers  – They’re back again this week!   Make a quick salad sliced with the cipollini onions and some feta cheese with a simple vinaigrette.
Storage: In an airtight (plastic) bag in the refrigerator. Uses: Raw When to use: Within 5 days.

Delivery is July 19th. Future deliveries will be made every other Tuesday to Alewife.  LWF strongly encourages orders to be placed by the Thursday (midnight) before the following delivery date.

Lewis Waite Farm CSA Extras program strives to connect small farms and producers to consumers within our region. We offer a single platform for you to gain access to a wide variety of farm fresh, all natural, artisanal, and organic products. Between our Extras service and your CSA share, you can eliminate (at least greatly reduce!) the weekly trip to the grocery store.
We partner with small, family run operations. If you have questions, we can ask the person who grew or made your food. Our producers take great pride in their products, and we take pride in offering them to you. Orders are placed via our online platform. You pay as you go, and order only what you want. Free delivery to your CSA!
Lewis Waite Farm CSA Extras can offer you pasture raised meat and poultry (10 kinds of meat), fresh eggs and bread, grass fed butter, yogurt and ice cream, artisan cheese from sheep, goat or cows’ milk, including aged raw milk cheeses. We offer many pantry staples, too, all local and naturally made: granola, fresh stone-ground organic flour, dried organic beans and grains, natural jams and chutneys, natural sweeteners, locally roasted organic coffee, sugar free apple sauces, and more. You can see a complete list on our website, www.csalewiswaitefarm.com.
